Rosana Cohen - Ceramicist

It is a privilege to have found clay as a medium to further discover the strong sense of connection I feel in the natural environment where I live at Hallett Cove, South Australia. Inspiration comes while overlooking a gully down to a rocky beach, cliffs and the weather over the ocean. The view from my home looks down on to the steep cliffs of Kurnabinna Gully, a rocky beach and out to sea. The Hallett Cove Conservation Park is nearby. Many hours have been spent exploring the geology and marvelling at the dramatic landscape and natural environment that is my “backyard”. My ceramics reflect this. When working the clay with bare hands, I am tapping into something primal...it is sacred and special. For many years before me my ancestors have done the same, and now I am also playing a part in this old tradition of alchemy making and creating artwork using clay and fire. My intention is to infuse all that inspires and connects me to who I am in nature, and to convey that when making a piece, giving it life and an energy all of it’s own, and to communicate something special and unique to others. All my work is hand-built with varying earthenware clays, often starting with a pinch pot or slab then coiling to build a form that is well balanced and unique.
